HER STORY

HEATHER CLEGG

A visual artist for over forty years I work in both two and three dimensions. My work mainly concerns itself with the natural environment. Hopefully this will be an inspiration for many to value what we have and aid in it’s conservation. I have undertaken many field trips, especially to Australian World Heritage Sites including being invited by the Museums and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory to take part in an Artist’s Camp in Kakadu and exhibit with them in 1991 and 1992.

Born in Adelaide, South Australia, I obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Adelaide and then completed a three year course at the South Australian School of Art in 1969. I was elected a Fellow of the Royal South Australian Society of Arts in 1978.

People who have influenced my work have been Mary P. Harris, Brian Seidel, Milton Moon, Regina Jaugietis, Peg Burke, Durham Rayner and Jacqueline Hick. I have always found so many things to investigate in both concept and techniques but have not been a follower of current trends. Sometimes some years after a particular interest I have noticed others developing it. It is an interesting journey.

My first solo exhibition was in 1974 and there have been many since in Queensland, S.A., Victoria, N.S.W. and the N.T. A major touring exhibition was “Moods of Lake Mungo which was shown at the Gorman House Community Art Centre, Canberra, A.C.T., Flinders University Art Museum, South Australia and the Mildura Arts Centre, Victoria from 1989 to 1991.

I have also exhibited overseas in Texas U.S.A.; Christchurch, New Zealand; Penang, Malasia and Himeji, Japan.

My work is in the collections of the Art Gallery of South Australia; Museums and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, Darwin; Himeji City Council, Japan; Mildura City Reginal Gallery, Mildura, Victoria; ANUTEC, Canberra; A.M.P; Reserve Bank of Australia; Araluen Art Centre, Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Burnside City Council; Tea Tree Gully City Council, South Australia; Northern Territory and in many private collections both in Australia and overseas.
